Chiang Mai Songkran Festival 12.-15.4.2008
The most obvious feature in celebrating Songkran is the throwing of water. People wander the streets with water containers and water cannons themselves or by post at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passers-by. However, this has not always been the main activity of this festival. Songkran is traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, family members, friends, neighbors and monks.
Apart from the throwing of water, people may celebrate Songkran by going to a wat (Buddhist monastery) to pray and provide food to monks.
